Infrastructure considerations for IT leaders
By 2020, deep learning will have reached a fundamentally different stage of maturity. Deployment and adoption will no longer be confined to experimentation, becoming a core part of day-to-day business operations across most fields of research and industries.
Why? Because advancements in the speed and accuracy of the hardware and software that underpin deep learning workloads have made it both viable and cost-effective. Much of this added value will be generated by deep learning inference – that is, using a model to infer something about data it has never seen before. Models can be deployed in the cloud or data center, but more and more we will see them on end devices like cameras and phones.
Intel predicts that there will be a shift in the ratio between cycles of inference and training from 1:1 in the early days of deep learning, to well over 5:1 by 2020¹. Intel calls this the shift to ‘inference at scale’ and, with inference also taking up
You can migrate live VMs between Intel processor-based servers but migration in a mixed CPU environment requires downtime and administrative hassle
A study commissioned by Intel Corp.
One of the greatest advantages of adopting a adopting a public, private, or hybrid cloud environment is being able to easily migrate the virtual machines that run your critical business applications—within the data center, across data centers, and between clouds. Routine hardware maintenance, data center expansion, server hardware upgrades, VM consolidation, and other events all require your IT staff to migrate VMs. For years, one powerful tool in your arsenal has been VMware vSphere® vMotion®, which can live migrate VMs from one host to another with zero
downtime, provided the servers share the same underlying architecture. The EVC (Enhanced vMotion Compatibility) feature of vMotion makes it possible to live migrate virtual machines even between different generations of CPUs within a given architecture.
"Modernizing apps on the cloud isn’t an “all or nothing” decision. Businesses want the option to modernize on-premises or choose multi-cloud solutions that meet their needs. That’s why we created Anthos, a new solution which lets you run your applications, unmodified, on existing on-prem hardware investments or in the public cloud. So that you write once and deploy anywhere.

"As businesses have embraced application development, they have also adopted cloud technologies that provide their teams lesser reliance on hardware. In this sponsored Economist Intelligence Unit report, we look at the real-life experiences of over 1,000 business executives and understand the importance of close alignment between development teams, C-suite, and the wider business.
Read the report and find out how you can manage application development to unlock its full potential."

Today’s students are accustomed to leveraging technology as part of their education. For in-class and at-home learning, many are leveraging 1-to-1 iPad programs. For many more, a computer lab is made available to offer access to educational materials.
Labs are a cost-effective and efficient way to ensure students have access to a computer with the apps they need to be successful, saving students and parents the cost of purchasing computer hardware and software. Labs ensure digital equity for students who would not otherwise be able to afford these luxuries.
And, many school computer labs are Mac labs. Mac has a longer shelf life than PC, countless educational apps and students simply prefer them.
In order to set students up for educational and professional success, K-12 schools need to equip students with secure technology and a customized experience when they sit down at any computer in the lab.
Today’s students are accustomed to leveraging technology as part of their education. For in-class learning at K-12 environments, many are offering 1-to-1 iPad programs. While some universities are moving towards a 1-to-1 iPad model, such as The Ohio State University, many others are relying on computer labs to offer the technical tools students need.
In order to set these young adults up for professional success, higher education institutions need to equip students with secure technology and a customized experience when they sit down at any computer in the lab.

If your organization's servers run applications that are critical to your business, chances are that you'd benefit from an application delivery solution. Today's Web applications can be delivered to users anywhere in the world and the devices used to access Web applications have become quite diverse.
At a projected market of over $4B by 2010 (Goldman Sachs), virtualizationhas firmly established itself as one of the most importanttrends in Information Technology. Virtualization is expectedto have a broad influence on the way IT manages infrastructure.Major areas of impact include capital expenditure and ongoingcosts, application deployment, green computing, and storage.
The idea of load balancing is well defined in the IT world: A network device accepts traffic on behalf ofa group of servers, and distributes that traffic according to load balancing algorithms and the availabilityof the services that the servers provide. From network administrators to server administrators to applicationdevelopers, this is a generally well understood concept.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) provides rapid access to flexible and low-cost IT resources. With cloud computing, public sector organizations no longer need to make large upfront investments in hardware, or spend time and money on managing infrastructure. The goal of this whitepaper is to help you gain insight into some of the financial considerations of operating a cloud IT environment and learn how to maximize the overall value of your decision to adopt AWS.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers scalable, cost-efficient cloud services that public sector customers can use to meet mandates, reduce costs, drive efficiencies, and accelerate innovation. The procurement of an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) cloud is unlike traditional technology purchasing. Traditional public sector procurement and contracting approaches that are designed to purchase products, such as hardware and related software, can be inconsistent with cloud services (like IaaS). A failure to modernize contracting and procurement approaches can reduce the pool of competitors and inhibit customer ability to adopt and leverage cloud technology.
Over the past ten years, IT personnel costs have risen faster than hardware and software investments. IT services have not improved process-wise and still require as much manpower, if not more, to operate now as they did in the past. As firms spend 76% of their IT budget on maintenance and support, they will naturally invest in BSM solutions that will reduce costs, enable ITIL, and provide an optimal ROI.
Virtualization is now mainstream. Enterprises continue to heavily invest in virtualization projects and while short term hardware and cost saving benefits are being achieved, few enterprises achieve anywhere close to the full potential of virtualization as they struggle with new problems like assuring performance and availability, preventing VM sprawl, and maximizing resource utilization
Achieving effective and efficient high availability protection for larger IBM i environments requires careful thought and clear understanding of the technology options. This white paper describes what you need to know in order to make an informed decision about IBM i high availability strategies so that your business requirements for Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) are not compromised
